Standards are boring! But wait! They are also useful and important! Since the standards are always important, my goal here is to make them useful.<\/p>\n

The Common Core Writing Standards are a clear, concise, and precise target for writing teachers and writers. While they do not contain the entire world of writing, what they do present, they present well. Sadly, as is so often the case, the standards were not created in a form that teachers can easily use in the classroom as a teaching tool. Having said that, I did not want to simplify the standards or dumb down the language. I wanted to keep the standards intact, but also make them user-friendly.<\/p>\n

Here is what I did to make them user-friendly:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong><\/span> I placed the standards in a \u201cTHE WRITER\u201d present-tense format. This format works well for both writers and readers who analyze writing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/span> I created both checklist and table versions. Furthermore, I created a couple of versions of each with different spacing. With some versions, you can print all the writing standards on a single page or two, and on other versions, it will take more pages.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong><\/span> For the three text types (my favorite part of the standards), I created a \u201cBroken-Down Version.\u201d As you will see, \u201cW.8.1.b\u201d is one item in the standards, but that one item is made up of four parts. In the Broken-Down Version, I broke down \u201cW.8.1.b\u201d into four parts. I only created a Broken-Down Version for the \u201cThree Text Types and Purposes.\u201d I did not do it for \u201cProduction and Distribution of Writing,\u201d etc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In every set of standards, I link to the original standards so that you can see the difference. Hopefully, you will find my version much more user-friendly. Teachers can use these checklist and table versions of the Common Core writing standards in four different ways:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong><\/span> As a tool for teaching writing.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/span> As a student-writing checklist.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong><\/span> As a literary-analysis tool.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong><\/span> As a tool to track your teaching.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As you consider which version to print, ask these three questions:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong><\/span> What do you want to use the standards for?<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/span> Will a checklist or a table work better?<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> <\/span>How many pages do you want to print and make copies of?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Everyone should download and print the high school writing standards, as they contain the most detailed and complete list of genre-specific writing skills.<\/p>\n

Note<\/em>:<\/strong> Please look at the outline of the standards below. In many of the grades (K-12), I change the order of the standards to reduce the number of pages you need to print: e.g., I frequently place Argument and Narrative on the same page because Argument and Informative\/Explanatory won\u2019t fit on a single page.<\/p>\n
