We will cover a lot on this page, and you will leave with a fantastic newfound understanding of nouns. You will want to spend some time with the giant list of 4,640 nouns that follow, and you will want to gain a solid understanding of the list of 18 noun suffixes that follow. But before all that, we need some basic but unusual noun knowledge.<\/p>\n

Truthfully, much of what we teach young students about grammar and language is wrong. Take a look at these two sentences:<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0We demand excellence<\/strong><\/span>!\u00a0 \u00a0 (excellence = noun).<\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0This is excellent<\/strong><\/span>!\u00a0 \u00a0 (excellent = adjective).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Do you find that the adjective is any more descriptive than the noun? I don\u2019t. In fact, to most people, the two words mean about the same thing. Semantically<\/span>, they are very similar. But syntactically<\/span>, they are different because they function as different parts of speech. Let\u2019s take a closer look at this.<\/p>\n

    The Noun Slot: Where Do Nouns Go in a Sentence?<\/h3>\n

    Syntax<\/em> is the set of rules that guide where words belong in a sentence. In short, sentences are composed of syntactic slots. Adjectives go in the adjective slot, nouns go in the noun slot, etc.<\/p>\n

    We have five basic noun slots: 1) subject, 2) predicate noun, 3) direct object, 4) indirect object, and 5) object of the preposition. Can you identify all of the nouns in the sentence below? (Sadly, most people can\u2019t. Congratulations if you can! I provide the answers below!)<\/p>\n

    \u00bb\u00a0 The juxtaposition of opposites is an effective strategy for creating interest.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Before we take a closer look at that sentence, here are a few simpler sentences that highlight the noun slots:<\/p>\n

    1.\u00a0 \u00a0Reading<\/strong><\/span> (subject) is an essential skill<\/strong><\/span> (predicate noun).
    \n2.\u00a0 \u00a0Sue<\/strong><\/span> (subject) bought a present<\/strong><\/span> (direct object) for her mom<\/strong><\/span> (indirect object).
    \n3.\u00a0 \u00a0Bill<\/strong><\/span> (subject) leaves for school<\/strong><\/span> (object of the preposition) early in the morning<\/strong><\/span> (object of the preposition).<\/p>\n

    Now, here is a closer examination of that sentence from above:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00bb\u00a0 <\/span>The juxtaposition<\/strong><\/span> (subject) of opposites<\/strong><\/span> (object of the preposition) is an effective strategy<\/strong><\/span> (predicate noun) for creating<\/strong><\/span> (object of the preposition) interest<\/strong><\/span> (direct object).<\/p>\n

    Many of the nouns on the giant list of 4,640 nouns more closely resemble the complex nouns in the above sentence compared to the simpler nouns in the sentences above. Let\u2019s take a closer look at these complex nouns.<\/p>\n

    Mostly Untouchable: Touchable Nouns Omitted<\/h3>\n

    If you scroll down, you will find a massive list of nouns. Interestingly, most of the nouns on the list are UNTOUCHABLE NOUNS. Yes, I intentionally omitted most touchable nouns, and in the process, I left out most of the nouns that young students typically learn. We can\u2019t keep teaching kids the same kinds of nouns year after year and expect them to master how language really works.<\/p>\n

    Concrete vs. Abstract Nouns VS. Touchable vs. Untouchable Nouns<\/h3>\n

    Teachers often teach concrete and abstract nouns in the context of touchable and untouchable. (Note: It\u2019s a bit more complicated than this.) My goal was to keep the noun list primarily untouchable<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    As I created this list, I had to decide what to do with the people nouns<\/em>. Many important nouns and noun suffixes related to \u201cwhat people do.\u201d I don\u2019t find that what a person does is touchable. Here\u2019s how I see it:<\/p>\n
